Our Story

What began as a breaking point during the pandemic has grown into a national movement to put moms — and families — first.

What’s Good for Moms is Good for America

For too long, America has treated motherhood, child care, and paid leave like personal choices — not public priorities. But these aren’t just women’s issues. They’re economic imperatives.

Women are the backbone of our economy — as mothers, educators, caregivers, innovators, and leaders. When women thrive in the workforce, families thrive. And when families thrive, so does the country.

It’s time to put moms first.

We are working to change attitudes and policy around paid leave and child care. We fight to help moms so families — and our economy — can thrive.

How We Got Started

About Moms First

In the thick of the COVID pandemic, Reshma Saujani, CEO and founder of Girls Who Code, was working 16-hour days. She was bringing her entire organization online and had her two young boys at home because there was no child care at the time. Women everywhere were in the same situation: they worked, mothered, and taught. There was no relief: it’s estimated that more than 2 million moms who left the workforce during the pandemic did not return.

Reshma launched The Marshall Plan for Moms in January 2021 to ignite a conversation about the struggles facing moms and families, and how those challenges were affecting the American economy.

In 2022, the Marshall Plan for Moms evolved into Moms First, a national movement supporting America’s 85 million moms. Today, Moms First is elevating the conversation about moms and families to the highest levels of government and policy, focusing on two core issues: paid leave and affordable child care for all families.

Together, we can fight to build a society that puts moms first by addressing a national child care crisis, finally bringing paid leave to America, and transforming our workplaces, our government, and our culture to deliver the change moms need.

We’re fighting for moms and families, and we hope you’ll join us.

Together, We’re Redefining What Moms Deserve

Our vision is a country that truly values the role of moms in society. We are working for paid leave and affordable, accessible child care so moms and families can thrive.
